Spring School: Visionary Prototypes for Extreme Urban Biodiversity Spring School

The LINA x DAE Spring School is a call for initiatives and invites the next generation of artists, designers and architects to act against the extinction of species within urban environments. The spring school will be part of and take place during the 1st Design Triennale in Covilhã, Portugal. We will develop visionary prototypes for extreme urban biodiversity, rooted deeply in the unique character of the local ecology of Covilhã.

Prototypes will be inspired by the complex interactions between different species—whether insects, plants, or other living organisms— serving as the core of the projects. In an era where human actions disrupt these vital relationships, it’s essential to reimagine the built environment as an interconnected ecosystem where all forms of life can coexist. The LINA x DAE Spring School offers a practical learning environment where students work closely with LINA fellows to develop site-specific and independent projects.

The following workshops are included:

ECHOES OF THE EARTH – A Workshop facilitated by LINA fellows Planting Solidarity

This workshop encourages students to approach design through an interdisciplinary perspective, where the local, social, and ecological context serves as a compass for future projects and ideas. In the case study of Covilhã, students will have the opportunity to collaborate and co-create across various disciplines, ranging from rural and urban food systems to material design and sound exploration. By engaging in a diverse set of hands-on activities, we will explore creative and interactive methods to understand the endogenous capacities of bioregions, such as local knowledge, materials, culture and food. We will explore walking tours as our main methodology for discovering community, individual connections and local neighbourhoods.

ZÊZERE RIVERSCAPING – A Workshop facilitated by LINA fellows szabadonbalaton x gubahámori

We invite you to explore the Zêzere River, its inflowing waters, and its watersheds through a cultural urbanist lens. Students will jointly map visible and hidden layers of water use from multiple perspectives. This conceptual exploration will focus on understanding the multifaceted role of water in Covilhã’s urban and cultural contexts, as well as its broader impact on the Zêzere region. By exploring the intricate relationships between people and water, this workshop aims to provide insight into both visible and hidden forces shaping the region’s identity and future.
